The Spanish Olympic Committee has a well-established Sustainability Strategy. The Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), as many organisations on the international scene, has a responsibility in protecting the environment and promoting good business practices. Therefore, since 2017, following Agenda 2020 of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its Sustainability Strategy, COE has defined its Sustainability Strategy that is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Agenda 2030 of the United Nations (UN). COE’s strategy aims to apply sustainable policies in our internal and external operations to reduce our carbon footprint, being an inspiration to the Olympic movement in Spain and to Spanish society.

COE has identified 6 areas of action, in which we activate the SDGs with clear objectives, tasks, timing and key performance indicators. In this video you can see the COE Sustainability Strategy.

In order to develop these actions, COE has reached partnerships and alliances with top ranked companies and institutions such as Toyota, Iberdrola, Ibereólica, UCAM, Ecoembes, Banco Santander, UNITAR and FEMP. Moreover, COE is a signatory member of the UN Global Compact since October 2017.  In November 2019, COE was the first National Olympic Committee in the world to become a signatory member of “Sport for Climate Action” that aims to achieve the objectives set out in the Paris Agreement in sport.

COE is also a member of the IOC Working Group that develops and promotes the IOC Sustainability Strategy in the Olympic Movement. Along with COE, 12 European National Olympic Committees are members of this Working Group.

Since the beginning of this journey in June 2017, COE has applied numerous measures to reduce our carbon footprint. These measures include:

• hybrid mobility since September 2017.
• 100% elimination of single-use plastic bottles since October 2018.
• 100% of energy consumption from renewable sources since August 2019.
